Every
third week of January, we look back on that infamous day—Jan.
22, 1973—on which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the historic
Roe v. Wade decision. We pause—perhaps get pretty sad,
pray—and wonder if the legalized destruction of unborn children
(now standing at approximately 45 million souls silenced) will ever
end in America.
Legalized
abortion in the United States has radically desensitized our culture.
But like the proverbial frog in the kettle, we 21st century Americans
may live our lives too close to the flame; we may not be fully aware
of America's true situation culturally or historically. We do know this—our
nation 's once strong, biblically-based respect for the life of the
unborn child, for children generally, for the infirmed, and for the
aged is deteriorating with each passing year. Roe v. Wade and
its legal progeny are incrementally laying the philosophical and legal
foundation for physician-assisted suicide, euthanasia of the elderly
and the handicapped, and now, quite possibly, the Brave New World
of human cloning. But, 35 years after Roe v. Wade, the issue
is far from settled. It seems clear that abortion and the right-to-life-for-all
issue is going to be with us for a long while.
So
what can we do to effectively fight this battle? The first
thing is to pray for God's mercy on America, in spite of this second
great national sin. Next, we must all learn to value the incredible
importance and impact of our citizenship. Let our voices be heard in
conversation, in the media, in the halls of government, and at the ballot
box. Our right as Americans to vote, to support pro-life candidates,
to run for office, and to demand just laws from our elected leaders
and our judiciary is the cornerstone of hope for the unborn. Third,
we must all realize that giving our financial support to pro-life initiatives
and organizations is not an option, it is an absolute. We cannot beat
an organized something like the radical pro-abortion lobby with nothing.
Fourth, there are undoubtedly many practical things we all can do locally
to express our love and to advance a pro-life ethic in our city, state
and nation. Some of these many practical things can be found here.
Be
encouraged! Hope can never die for the unborn child in these
United States because protecting unborn life through good laws and many
practical initiatives is the right thing to do—period! Millions
of your fellow citizens are, little-by-little, overcoming evil with
good each day: standing with you, praying with you, working alongside
you, all committed to a solid pro-life ethic for the long haul.
At
Oklahoma Family Policy Council, we've created this special section to
keep you up-to-date on the pro-life/sanctity of human life issue. Here,
you will find useful information on: the abortion issue, the upcoming
lawsuit against the abortion industry, the sanctity of human life, euthanasia/physician-assisted
suicide, and purported developments in human cloning. We're also included
a list of many practical things we can all do to express our pro-life
convictions. Finally, we invite you to consider supporting Oklahoma
Family Policy Council, or other worthy pro-life organizations, in this
important, life-affirming work.
